POET LAUREATE EVENTS 2025-2026

I'm honoured to have been appointed as the City of Victoria's 7th Poet Laureate on lək̓ʷəŋən homelands. My term runs from Jan 1st 2025 to Dec 31st 2026

(although it's running three months behind due to the city's reconfiguration of the laureateship).

All forthcoming events will live on this page, as well as on the city's website.

My focus will be multi-faceted and based on community needs.

Here are some of my areas of interest:

building community through poetry

poetry education and services

connecting to our shared land through poetry.

A National Poetry Month Event 2025

Date: Sunday, April 27th, 2 p.m.
Location: Beacon Hill Park—Beside the Garry Oak Meadow near the children's playground (or at the Band Shelter if the field is wet).

Join me for Poetry on the Land—an afternoon of poetry, reflection, and community connection.

The event features a special welcome by Brianna Bear, Songhees Territory Acknowledger, with readings by Sho Yamagushiku (2024 Victoria Butler Book Prize finalist for Shima), Maleea Acker (author of Hesitating Once to Feel Glory), Fatima-Ayan Malika Hirsi (author of Everything Good is Dying), and Shauntelle Dick-Clarkson (2025-2027 Youth Poet Laureate of Victoria).

All are welcome!

I live and write univited on the homelands of the lək̓ʷəŋən peoples (also known as the Songhees and Esquimalt Nations), and the W̱SÁNEĆ peoples (also known as the Tsartlip, Pauquachin, Tsawout, Tseycum and Malahat Nations). Their teachings have persevered for untold generations and their stewardship of the land continues to this day. I'm deeply grateful and offer my thanks: həyšxʷq́̓ə siiem  (thank you honorable ones).
